Steady Rise in European Refugee Population

New data released by Eurostat on Tuesday reveals a continued upward trend in the number of individuals fleeing Ukraine who have sought temporary protection within the European Union. By the end of February 2026, the total count reached 4.4 million people, a marginal increase of 22,415 individuals compared to the previous month. This 0.5% growth indicates that despite the prolonged nature of the conflict, the movement of people into EU member states remains a persistent reality for regional authorities managing social and logistical infrastructure.

Germany and Poland Maintain Primary Host Status

Germany continues to shoulder the largest share of the humanitarian response, hosting approximately 1.27 million Ukrainian beneficiaries. This figure represents 28.8% of the total protection seekers across the entire bloc. Poland remains the second largest host nation with 966,595 individuals, accounting for 22% of the total, while Czechia follows with nearly 400,000 people. While 24 EU nations reported an increase in protection seekers, led primarily by Germany and Spain, a small number of countries, including France and Estonia, recorded slight decreases in their registered refugee populations.

Disproportionate Impact on Central European Infrastructure

While the total numbers are highest in larger economies, the density of the refugee population per capita shows a significant concentration in Central Europe. Czechia currently holds the highest ratio with 36.6 beneficiaries per thousand residents, followed closely by Poland and Slovakia. These figures sit well above the European Union average of 9.8 per thousand people, highlighting the substantial pressure on local services and housing markets in countries neighboring or in close proximity to the conflict zone.
