Heightened terrorist and extremist threats
Europol spokesman Jan Op Gen Oorth told the Spanish news agency EFE on Thursday that the "level of terrorist threat and violent extremism in EU territory is considered high." The agency is particularly concerned that the conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States will trigger "immediate repercussions" within member states. The primary concern is the potential for "Axis of Resistance" groups—networks of Shia militias from Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen—to carry out destabilizing activities on European soil, including intimidation campaigns, terrorist financing, and targeted attacks.
The risk of "Lone Actor" radicalization
Beyond organized networks, Europol warned that the war is accelerating radicalization through the "rapid spread of polarizing content" online. This digital flurry is expected to influence individuals acting alone or in small, autonomous cells. The agency noted that diaspora communities within the EU are particularly vulnerable to these short-term radicalization processes, as information—and misinformation—about the conflict in the Middle East circulates with unprecedented speed and emotional intensity.
AI-enhanced cyberattacks and fraud
The security warning also highlighted a significant surge in cyber-related threats. Europol expects an increase in cyberattacks targeting critical European infrastructure, alongside sophisticated online fraud operations. These activities are reportedly utilizing advanced Artificial Intelligence to exploit the public's search for information regarding the war. State-linked actors may use these tools to conduct disinformation campaigns or to disrupt essential services, further complicating the security landscape for EU member states.
