In a statement addressing the technical nature of the event, Amazon Web Services confirmed that the unauthorized access was the result of compromised account credentials. A company spokesperson emphasized that AWS did not experience a systemic security failure and that their services operated exactly as designed. This suggests that the attackers gained entry using legitimate login details obtained through other means, a method that currently accounts for approximately one third of all reported cloud security incidents.

Public administration networks have become a primary focus for cyber criminals, representing 38 percent of all recorded incidents according to recent annual threat reports.
