Judicial Integrity Questioned Ahead of National Ceremony

The Kerem Navot organization, an advocacy group focused on land policy, has challenged the selection of Rabbi Avraham Zarbiv as an honorary torchlighter for Israel’s upcoming Independence Day. The group filed an ethics complaint with the state ombudsman for judges, alleging that Zarbiv’s residence in the Beit El settlement was constructed in violation of state law. This development introduces a significant layer of scrutiny toward the vetting process for national honors, particularly when the recipient holds a prominent position within the state’s rabbinical judiciary.

Decades of Legal Inaction on Property Demolition

According to documentation cited by Kerem Navot, a demolition order has been active against Zarbiv’s home since the year 2000. The organization asserts that the structure was erected on privately-owned Palestinian land, a factor that traditionally necessitates removal under Israeli civil administration guidelines. Despite the order’s existence for over two decades, it has reportedly remained unenforced, a situation the advocacy group discovered through public records and freedom of information requests submitted to the Defense Ministry’s Civil Administration.

Controversial War-Time Statements Under Scrutiny

Zarbiv has already faced public criticism for his dual role as a judge and a member of an IDF reserve bulldozing unit. The rabbi has made several public comments celebrating the destruction of structures in the Gaza Strip during recent military operations. His rhetoric, which includes calls to "flatten Gaza" and the establishment of new settlements within the Strip, has drawn condemnation from those who argue such statements are incompatible with the impartial nature of a judicial office.
