Protest Erupts Over Traditional Leadership Conduct
Tensions reached a critical level in the Obeagu-Ugwuaji Autonomous Community on Monday as villagers gathered to demonstrate against their traditional ruler, Igwe Ikenga. The protest was sparked by a series of grievances involving alleged high-handedness and the erosion of community trust. Demonstrators, including women and youth leaders, occupied local spaces to voice their dissatisfaction with the current administration, citing a total breakdown in the relationship between the monarch and his subjects.
Allegations of Systematic Land Grabbing
At the center of the unrest is a bitter dispute over ancestral lands. Comrade Shedrak Ani, the General Secretary of the community’s security wing, claimed that the Igwe has allowed interest groups to convert community heritage into private business ventures without public consent. The youth wing of the community has demanded a comprehensive land audit to distinguish between land ceded to the government and the remaining territory intended for community interest. Residents expressed fear that their primary resource is being siphoned away for personal gain by a small circle of influential individuals.
Financial Impropriety and Vanishing Millions
The President General of the Town Union, Obichukwunoso Freedom, has raised alarms regarding the management of community finances. Following his election in 2021, which ended an 18-year period of stagnant leadership, Freedom claimed to have discovered massive, unexplained withdrawals from three different accounts. He alleged that over 400 million naira has been moved without being directed toward community development. According to Freedom, there is a total lack of scholarships, streetlights, or empowerment schemes to justify such significant expenditures, which leadership reportedly attributed to legal costs.
