Call for Reconciliation Amidst Judicial Resolution

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, Vitus Okechi, has issued a formal appeal for unity within the party’s ranks following the Supreme Court's intervention in a long-standing leadership dispute. In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Okechi characterized the court's decision as a "no victor, no vanquished" scenario, intended to stabilize the party rather than penalize any specific faction. He noted that with the legal issues now resolved, the primary focus for every member must shift toward internal reconciliation and the restoration of the party’s administrative foundations.

Nullification of the Ibadan Convention

The apex court’s ruling specifically targeted the Ibadan convention, an event organized by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. That convention had produced the former Governor of Jigawa, Tanimu Turaki, as a leadership choice, standing in opposition to a faction supported by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. By nullifying the proceedings of the Ibadan gathering, the Supreme Court has effectively reset the party's leadership parameters. Okechi maintained that this reset should be seen as an opportunity for the "PDP family" to come back together under a unified banner, setting aside the frictions that characterized the dual-faction era.

Strategic Preparations for the 2027 Electoral Cycle

Despite the recent internal turbulence, the Enugu PDP chairman expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to compete in the upcoming 2027 general elections. According to Okechi, the state chapter has not remained stagnant during the legal battles; instead, it has continued to engage with potential aspirants. He revealed that the party is already holding meetings with those interested in various offices and plans to unveil its candidate lineup as soon as the transition process is finalized. He asserted that the party is fully prepared for the upcoming electoral challenges and is positioned to "bounce back" in Enugu State.
