The Druzhba Dispute
The Druzhba pipeline, one of the world's longest oil networks, serves as a critical artery for landlocked Hungary and Slovakia. The current outage has forced these nations to rely on dwindling reserves, prompting Orban to use gas exports as leverage. "We are gradually halting gas deliveries... and will store the gas that remains with us," Orban stated, signaling a "Hungary-first" storage strategy ahead of his re-election bid next month.
Impact on Ukraine's Energy Security
The suspension of Hungarian gas flows presents a significant challenge for Ukraine, which relies on its neighbors for a diversified energy supply.
Volume at Risk: Ukraine contracted 180 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas from Hungary for March, accounting for 28% of its total imports.
Current Status: Despite Orban's announcement, data from Hungarian operator FGSZ shows that 8.3 mcm was still delivered on Wednesday morning, maintaining Tuesday's levels.
