The 2025 Imbalance
Last season, the narrative at KTM was dominated by one name: Pedro Acosta. The rookie sensation scored nearly double the points of any other RC16 rider, highlighting a concerning over-reliance on a single talent. While Acosta’s rapid adaptation was a marvel, it underscored a struggle for KTM veterans like Brad Binder and new recruits at Tech3. Heading into 2026, the Austrian manufacturer’s priority has been to level the playing field within its own garage, ensuring that the development of the bike isn’t skewed by just one riding style.
Brad Binder’s Buriram Breakthrough
The most encouraging sign for KTM fans is the resurgence of Brad Binder. Following a winless 2025 campaign, the South African stalwart appeared to find his "lost confidence" during the final pre-season test at Buriram. A late set-up change transformed his braking stability and rear grip, pushing the bike’s limits further than he has experienced in years. Acosta himself admitted to being shocked by Binder’s data, noting, “Holy f**k, how is he riding now?” This internal competition is exactly what KTM needs to challenge the dominant Ducatis at the front of the pack.
A Healthy Maverick Viñales
Another key element in KTM’s 2026 balance is Maverick Viñales. After a promising start to 2025 was derailed by a serious injury at the Sachsenring, the 10-time Grand Prix winner is now back to full fitness. Viñales’ experience was vital during KTM’s financial restructuring last year, and he now feels better prepared to extract the potential of the RC16. With a solid relationship established with his crew chief, Viñales believes he can surpass his early-2025 form and become a consistent podium threat once again.
