Electronic Arts is set to fundamentally transform the relationship between players and custom content creators with the introduction of an official in-game storefront. The upcoming "Sims Maker Program" provides a centralized platform for the publication and sale of user-generated assets, marking a significant shift for a franchise that has long relied on external modding communities. Starting March 17, 2026, PC and Mac users will be the first to access this marketplace, with console expansions for PlayStation and Xbox planned for the following months. Revenue Structures and the Moola Virtual Currency
The financial engine behind the new marketplace centers on a proprietary virtual currency dubbed "Moola." Under the terms of the program, creators designated as "Makers" will receive a 30% share of the revenue generated from their sales. For every 100 Moola spent by a consumer, the creator will earn $0.30, a rate that has already drawn comparisons to other major platforms like Roblox, where creators often retain significantly higher percentages. Despite the lower percentage, EA contends that the platform provides a streamlined path to monetization by handling the complex backend logistics that many independent creators struggle to manage on their own.
Operational Support and Platform Fee Coverage
To justify the revenue split, Electronic Arts has committed to absorbing the diverse costs associated with digital publishing. The publisher stated that it will cover all transactional expenses, including platform fees, value-added taxes, and server maintenance costs. Furthermore, the Sims Team plans to reinvest a portion of the marketplace earnings back into the Maker Program to fund human-led quality verification and professional translation services. Every approved "Maker Pack" will be translated into 18 supported languages, ensuring that community-made content can reach a truly global audience without the original creator needing to provide their own localization.
