Regional diplomatic initiative launched

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi stated on Thursday that Egypt has embarked on an honest and sincere mediation effort to end the ongoing war with Iran. During a military academy event, the Egyptian leader emphasized that the continuation of the conflict would inflict a high price on the region, characterizing the war as a result of mistaken strategic calculations. This disclosure marks the first official confirmation from Cairo regarding its active role in attempting to broker a ceasefire between the warring parties since hostilities began on February 28.

Multilateral coordination and preliminary talks

According to sources in Cairo, Egypt is coordinating closely with Turkey and Oman to persuade the belligerents to send representatives to the Egyptian capital for formal negotiations. This joint diplomatic mission has already involved delegates touring Gulf Arab states and establishing contact with officials in both Washington and Tehran. While relations between Egypt and Israel have remained tense since the 2023 Gaza conflict, the mediating nations are leveraging their previous experience in regional ceasefires to bridge the gap between the United States and the Iranian government.

Core issues and maritime security

The mediation framework currently under discussion covers several critical points of contention, including Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and its various missile programs. Negotiators are also addressing the status of Tehran’s support for regional armed groups and the possible release of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. A significant portion of the proposal focuses on revising maritime boundaries in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea to ensure the safe passage of global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab Al Mandeb strait.
