Strategic Shift in Educational Quality Assurance
The Federal Government has moved to tighten its oversight of the Nigerian education sector by introducing a National Textbook Ranking System. This initiative, designed for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools, seeks to institutionalize a higher level of standardization across all learning environments. By moving beyond simple approval to a comparative ranking process, the Federal Ministry of Education intends to eliminate inconsistencies in teaching quality and ensure that every student has access to materials that meet a unified national benchmark.
Expert Committees and Pedagogical Standards
While the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will maintain its legal authority to approve educational content, the new system adds a rigorous secondary layer of evaluation. Minister of Education Tunji Alausa and Minister of State Suwaiba Ahmad confirmed that the NERDC will establish standing subject committees. These groups, comprised of academic and pedagogical experts, will be tasked with performing granular assessments of textbooks to determine their suitability and effectiveness in delivering the national curriculum.
Eliminating the Proliferation of Learning Materials
One of the primary drivers of this policy is the need to address the uncontrolled increase of various textbooks in the Nigerian market. The ministry's statement indicates that once the ranking process is complete, only a select few of the highest-rated books for each subject will receive the government's official endorsement. This selective approach is intended to streamline the options available to schools and parents, effectively creating a "gold standard" for educational resources and preventing the use of subpar or non-compliant materials.
