A Controversial Exchange in the Presence of Authorities
The Edo State Police Command has responded to public outrage following a viral video involving Emmanuel Eghogho, a comedian and aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo popularly known as Agogo the Towncrier. In the footage, Eghogho is seen addressing the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, while making disparaging remarks about former presidential candidate Peter Obi, labeling him a "stupid man." The aide further issued a threat directed at members of the African Democratic Congress, stating he would personally hand over any party affiliate found in the state to the police.
Public Criticism of the Police Response
The circulation of the video prompted immediate criticism from observers who noted that the Commissioner of Police appeared to smile during the aide’s verbal attack and threats. This reaction led to questions regarding the impartiality of the state's top law enforcement officer and whether the police were tacitly endorsing political intimidation. Critics argued that the nature of the comments, made during an official engagement, required a more professional and corrective stance from the authorities present to maintain public confidence in the force's neutrality.
Official Disclaimer from the Edo Command
In a statement released on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the Edo Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, clarified that the remarks made by Eghogho do not reflect the views or position of the Command. The statement emphasized that at no time did Commissioner Agbonika align himself with the insults or the threats against ADC members. According to Ikoedem, the Commissioner remains a non partisan professional dedicated to the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force, regardless of the individual's attempt at "comedy and showmanship."
