Legal Blow to the David Mark Faction

The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intensified on Thursday, April 30, 2026, as Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, publicly addressed the alleged "hijacking" of the party’s administrative structure. The dispute reached a critical juncture after a Federal High Court in Abuja issued an injunction restraining the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing any congresses or conventions organized by the faction led by former Senate President David Mark. The court also barred Mark and his associates from interfering with the constitutional tenures of elected state executives.

Allegations of Constitutional Override

Speaking on Arise TV, Kachikwu detailed how the Mark faction allegedly dismantled existing party hierarchies. He asserted that the ADC constitution clearly vests the power to conduct congresses and conventions in the state chairmen. According to Kachikwu, David Mark’s group circumvented this by establishing ad hoc committees to supplant the functions of elected state "escrows." He claimed this move prompted widespread complaints from party members across the country who felt they had been forcibly pushed out of the organization they helped build.

The "Commoners" vs. "Political Buccaneers" Narrative

Kachikwu further alleged a class-based divide within the power struggle, claiming that many state chairmen who initially supported the Mark faction eventually returned to him after being sidelined. He asserted that these chairmen were told they were "too poor" and "commoners" who did not fit the image the new leadership wanted for the party. Kachikwu described the Mark-led group as "political buccaneers" and "desperados" whose primary intention was to wreck the party rather than advance its democratic goals.
