Maui Comes to Life in New Cinematic Preview

On Monday, March 23, 2026, Disney unveiled an extended preview of the highly anticipated live-action Moana, marking the first time audiences have seen Dwayne Johnson’s Maui in motion since a brief teaser in late 2025. The 53-year-old actor, who originally voiced the character in the 2016 animated hit and its 2024 sequel, reprises the role in the flesh. The new footage showcases the intricate detail of Maui’s signature tattoos and flowing black hair, as well as the vibrant coastal environments of the island of Motunui. Fans also caught a glimpse of the live-action reimagining of the giant crab Tamatoa, a fan-favorite antagonist from the original story.

A New Face for the Chosen Voyager

While Johnson provides the star power, the trailer heavily features 14-year-old Catherine Laga'aia in the title role. The young actress, who was cast after an extensive global search, is seen answering the ocean’s call and demonstrating the powerful singing voice required for the film's iconic musical numbers. The plot remains faithful to the 2016 source material, following Moana as she ventures beyond the safety of her home reef to locate the legendary demigod and restore the "heart of Te Fiti" to save her people from ecological collapse.

Production Rigor and Artistic Continuity

The live-action remake is directed by Thomas Kail, known for his work on the Broadway sensation Hamilton. To ensure cultural and artistic continuity, the production team includes Auli‘i Cravalho—the original voice of Moana—and Lin-Manuel Miranda as producers. Johnson has been vocal about the physical demands of the role, revealing that his transformation into Maui required several hours of makeup and costume application each day on the Hawaiʻi-based set. This dedication to practical effects, combined with CGI for Maui’s magical fishhook and the sentient ocean, aims to create a grounded yet fantastical cinematic experience.
