Strategic Delay in the Toulouse Dialogue
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has moved to push back a major diplomatic encounter with French President Emmanuel Macron. The bilateral summit, which was set to be hosted in Toulouse this April, has been deferred until after the G7 gathering in Evian-les-Bains scheduled for June 15-17. According to diplomatic sources, Meloni initiated this request during a competitiveness retreat in Belgium earlier this month, seeking to align the bilateral talks with the broader international agenda of the summer.
The Toulouse meeting was intended to serve as a cornerstone of the Quirinale Treaty, a cooperation pact signed to solidify the transalpine partnership. It would have marked the first high-level summit between the two Mediterranean powers since 2020. While officials maintain that the rescheduling is purely logistical, the timing suggests a cautious approach to direct engagement during a period of heightened regional sensitivity.
Navigating Recent Diplomatic Friction
The decision to postpone follows a series of public disagreements between the two leaders on fundamental issues ranging from migration management to the rule of law. Most recently, tensions were stoked by comments regarding the death of a far-right activist in Lyon. President Macron criticized the Italian Prime Minister for her public remarks on the incident, which she framed as a European-wide tragedy. Meloni responded by expressing surprise and reiterating past instances where she felt France interfered in Italian domestic concerns.
Despite these recent rhetorical exchanges, French diplomats have ruled out a direct causal link between the spat and the summit's delay. However, the recurring friction highlights the fragility of the relationship between Paris and Rome. The postponed summit was specifically designed to mend these troubled ties and establish a joint framework for common policy priorities, a goal that must now wait until at least late June.
