Accelerated Timeline for Metro Manila’s Main Artery
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has reached a significant milestone in the restoration of Metro Manila's primary thoroughfare, Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. Phase 1 of the rehabilitation project, which spans the critical section from Roxas Boulevard in Pasay to Orense Street in Makati, is nearing total completion. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that the project is currently trending almost two months ahead of its original May 31 schedule. This rapid progress is attributed to a strategic shift in construction management, allowing the agency to deliver high-quality road improvements to motorists much earlier than anticipated.
Round-the-Clock Efforts During the Holy Week
The acceleration of the project was significantly boosted by an intensive "round-the-clock" labor schedule implemented during the Holy Week break. Taking advantage of reduced traffic volume, the DPWH successfully completed and reopened the newly renovated southbound lane of the Magallanes Flyover in Makati. This specific upgrade is expected to alleviate long-standing congestion issues at one of the city's busiest interchanges. Secretary Dizon emphasized that despite the speed of the work, the structural integrity and quality of the materials used were not compromised, ensuring a smoother and safer driving experience for thousands of daily commuters.
Transitioning to the Secondary Phase of Construction
With the first section almost finalized, the DPWH is shifting its focus to Phase 2 of the rehabilitation. This next stage will cover the remaining distance from Orense Street to Monumento in Caloocan City. The agency is set to conduct the bidding process for this phase later this month, following a direct mandate from the presidential administration to expedite infrastructure projects to minimize long-term transit delays. The second phase is projected to take approximately four months, a timeline that represents a drastic reduction from earlier estimates that suggested the project could last up to two years.
