Advocating For Women As Catalysts Of National Prosperity

The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has reiterated that targeted investment in women remains the most effective pathway to achieving broad societal growth. During a commemorative event for the 2026 International Women’s Day held in Asaba, NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Sonia Unobunjo argued that empowering women through education and leadership inclusion creates a multiplier effect. According to Unobunjo, when women are given equal access to economic opportunities, the resulting benefits extend beyond the individual to improve the stability of families, local communities, and the nation’s institutional strength.

The "Give To Gain" Philosophy In Mentorship and Support

The theme for the celebration, "Give to Gain," was used to underscore the necessity of intentional support systems for women. Comrade Unobunjo explained that true progress entails creating enabling environments where women can mentor the younger generation and offer mutual support. According to the association, this culture of "giving" opportunities and mentorship is what allows society to "gain" better health outcomes and economic resilience. The Chairperson also used the platform to condemn gender-based violence, stating that no circumstance serves as a valid excuse for the embarrassment, manhandling, or sexual assault of women.

Historical Perspectives And The Power Of Collaboration

Guest speaker Engr. Mrs. Adebowale T. Okonji-Umukoro, CEO of Graceville Group of Schools, provided a historical context to the movement, noting that International Women’s Day has now reached its 115th year. She encouraged women to see the celebration as a collective honor for mothers, daughters, and professional assistants worldwide. According to Engr. Okonji-Umukoro, the goal of the modern woman should be to foster collaboration across all sectors of society. She urged both men and women to actively support one another, suggesting that such synergy is the only way to break down the systemic barriers that currently hinder female advancement in professional and technical fields.
