Departure of a Founding Member Amid Democratic Concerns
Dr. Austin Orette, a prominent family medicine physician based in Texas and a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, has officially defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, Orette expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current internal direction of the APC in Delta State. He characterized his departure not as a personal abandonment of the party, but as a reaction to the party moving away from its original democratic foundations. According to Orette, the influx of newer members has created an environment where the contributions and voices of those who helped establish the party are increasingly marginalized.
Allegations of Incumbent Imposition and Lack of Primaries
A central driver for Orette’s defection is the alleged attempt by the APC leadership to shield incumbent representatives from internal competition. The Delta South senatorial hopeful accused the party of planning to hand tickets to current officeholders without conducting transparent primary elections. Orette argued that such practices are mechanically designed to stifle the exchange of ideas and prevent intellectually prepared candidates from reaching the National Assembly. By bypassing the primary process, he contends that the party is undermining the very democratic principles it was built to protect, effectively forcing out those who wish to contest through established legal channels.
Vision for Delta South: Healthcare, Jobs, and Investment
Shifting his focus to the needs of his constituency, Orette highlighted the dire socio-economic conditions in Delta South. He recalled a heartbreaking incident in his hometown where a lack of medical personnel led to the death of a woman, a tragedy that has informed his legislative priorities. If elected under the NDC banner, Orette pledged to transform the region by attracting foreign investment and revitalizing local infrastructure, specifically the Ogbe-Ijoh Market. His platform emphasizes entrepreneurship training for youth and the modernization of tools for local artisans, aiming to move beyond traditional patronage systems toward a sustainable, investment-driven economy.
