Exploitation of Minors in High-Value Theft

A complex criminal investigation in New Delhi has revealed a disturbing case of parental exploitation. Deputy Commissioner Anant Mittal confirmed the arrest of a man from New Seelampur who allegedly trained and directed his two children, aged 13 and 15, to pickpocket tourists. By using juveniles, the suspect aimed to minimize the risk of being caught or questioned by authorities in crowded areas like the historic Jama Masjid market. The man reportedly admitted during interrogation that he would take the stolen items and cash from his children immediately after their successful operations.

The Investigation and Recovery

The case was launched following a report by an Uzbek visitor who was in India seeking medical care for his youngest daughter’s cancer surgery. While sightseeing, the victim lost a sling bag containing $6,500 and his debit card. Detectives utilized a combination of technical surveillance and extensive CCTV analysis from the market area to track the movements of the two siblings. Following a raid on their residence, police recovered the full $6,500 in foreign currency, the victim’s debit card, and a mobile phone worth approximately $580, which investigators believe was purchased with a portion of the stolen funds.

Criminal History and Ongoing Legal Action

This incident appears to be part of a broader pattern of criminal behavior. Police records indicate that the father was already linked to a robbery case in Pandav Nagar, while the minors had been previously connected to motor vehicle thefts in the same district. While the children have been detained, the investigation remains active to determine if other family members or accomplices were involved in the scheme. The recovery of the funds is a significant relief for the victim, whose daughter is currently undergoing treatment in Gurgaon.
