Strategic Shift Toward High Margin Industrial Chemicals
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals facility in Lekki is set to transition into a major global hub for industrial feedstocks following a new partnership with the American firm Honeywell. This collaboration focuses on the production of high value petrochemicals, moving the refinery's primary output beyond traditional fuels. By integrating Honeywell UOP’s advanced process technologies, the refinery aims to manufacture essential components for plastics and detergents, addressing a significant gap in regional industrial supply chains.
Scaling Propylene Production Through Advanced Technology
Under the terms of the agreement, the refinery will utilize Oleflex technology to generate an additional 750,000 metric tonnes of propylene every year. Propylene serves as a fundamental building block for the manufacturing of consumer goods, packaging materials, and various industrial products. Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, noted that this technological adoption is a central part of the company's vision to bolster Nigeria’s industrial sector and reduce the nation's historical reliance on imported chemical inputs.
Global Leadership in Detergent Ingredient Manufacturing
The expansion also includes the targeted production of 400,000 metric tonnes of linear alkylbenzene, commonly known as LAB, which is the primary active ingredient in household detergents and surfactants. Once the facility reaches full operational capacity, the Lekki plant is expected to be recognized as one of the largest LAB production sites in the world. According to Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, the deployment of these digital solutions and catalysts will allow the refinery to maximize its throughput while meeting the rising global demand for sustainable chemical products.
