A Landmark in Sustainable Urban Planning
The River District has achieved national recognition as the third project in the United States—and the first in the Southeast—to be awarded the One Planet Living Leader designation. This honor highlights the development’s commitment to sustainable living, including the integration of expansive parks, trails, and preserved natural landscapes. Located just 10 miles west of downtown Charlotte and in close proximity to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the project balances high density urban utility with significant environmental stewardship, a priority for Crescent Communities since the initial groundbreaking.
Residential Scale and Architectural Diversity
The development is engineered to accommodate more than 2,300 single family homes and 2,350 rental apartments, including segments dedicated to mixed income housing. The residential landscape is divided into several distinct neighborhoods such as Westrow, Eastrow, and Basswood. Westrow serves as the 70 acre town center and includes the 318 unit NOVEL River District multifamily community. Earlier this month, Crescent Communities closed on an additional 140 single family home sites in the Basswood neighborhood, with construction on those residences slated to begin before the end of 2025.
Integration of Commercial and Community Hubs
At the heart of the district lies Forge Village, a community hub currently under construction that will feature a working farm, event pavilions, and various dining options. This "intentional living" model is designed to differentiate the project from traditional suburban sprawl by providing residents with immediate access to essential services and social gathering spots. The inclusion of commercial buildings and retail spaces ensures that the River District serves as a significant economic driver for West Charlotte, drawing both residents and visitors to the riverbank.
