The Anatomy of a Cryptic Clue
The golden rule of cryptic crosswords is that every clue contains two distinct parts:
The Definition: A straight synonym for the answer.
The Wordplay: A set of instructions on how to build the word using letter play.
The First Trick: The definition will always be at the very beginning or the very end of the clue. Everything else is "fodder" (the letters you use) and an "indicator" (the instruction on what to do with them).
