Specialist Units Take Lead in Hendon Probe

The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command has assumed leadership of the investigation into an arson attack that targeted a business in Hendon late Friday night. According to official statements, police and the London Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene at 10:31 p.m. after witnesses reported a man placing a plastic bag containing three bottles of flammable fluid against a row of shops. While the suspect attempted to ignite the containers, the fire failed to take hold fully, resulting in only minor damage to the storefront and no reported injuries.

Heightened Vigilance Amidst Regional Arson Spike

Commander Helen Flanagan of the Met’s counter-terrorism unit clarified that while this latest incident is not currently linked to other recent crimes, the decision to deploy specialist officers was made due to "clear similarities" in the methodology of the attacks. The Hendon incident occurred less than 48 hours after an attempted firebombing at the Finchley Reform Synagogue, where two individuals, ages 46 and 47, were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. These events have prompted a visible increase in armed police patrols and the deployment of specially trained behavioral detection officers across north-west London.

Targeting of Jewish Community Infrastructure

The current wave of hostilities first escalated in late March 2026, when four ambulances belonging to Hatzolah, a Jewish volunteer emergency service, were destroyed in Golders Green. The resulting explosions, caused by onboard oxygen cylinders, inflicted an estimated £1 million in damage and shattered windows in adjacent residential buildings. On Saturday, 18-year-old Judex Atshani appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court, becoming the fourth individual charged in relation to the ambulance attack, which authorities have officially classified as an antisemitic hate crime.
