A Somber Arraignment in Municipal Court
The legal proceedings against Aliyah Henderson commenced Friday morning as she faced a judge in Cleveland Municipal Court to answer for the deaths of her two children. Dressed in civilian clothing and appearing without a prior criminal record, the 28-year-old listened as prosecutors detailed the grim nature of the charges against her. The court granted the state's request for a high-security bond, setting the amount at $1 million for each count of aggravated murder. While her defense attorney argued for a "reasonable" bond amount, the judge cited the severity of the allegations and the potential risk to the community in maintaining the multimillion-dollar figure.
Discovery in the South Collinwood Neighborhood
The investigation into the disappearance of the two girls reached a tragic conclusion on Monday evening when a local resident made a harrowing discovery. While walking his dog in a field near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue, the man’s pet alerted him to a scent beneath the snow. Upon investigating, the citizen located a partially buried suitcase and immediately notified emergency dispatchers. When homicide detectives arrived to process the scene, they uncovered a second suitcase nearby, both containing the remains of young children. Police Chief Dorothy Todd indicated that the victims appeared to have been at the location for a significant period before their discovery.
Identification of the Young Victims
Following the recovery of the remains, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office worked to confirm the identities of the deceased. On Thursday, officials formally identified the girls as 10-year-old Amor Wilson and 8-year-old Mila Chatman. The two children were half-sisters who lived with Henderson prior to their deaths. The confirmation of their identities has sent shockwaves through the South Collinwood neighborhood, where a makeshift memorial of teddy bears, balloons, and flowers has begun to grow at the site where the suitcases were unearthed.
