Allegations of Institutional Partisanship
Two prominent civil society organizations have raised urgent alarms regarding the administrative conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission within Osun State. The Coalition for Concerned Nigerian Citizens and the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights issued a joint warning on Wednesday, suggesting that the upcoming governorship election could be compromised by partisan interests. In a formal petition to INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, the groups alleged that recent staff postings appear opaque and specifically designed to favor the All Progressives Congress by placing affiliated individuals in sensitive electoral roles.
Disparities in Administrative Procedures
The petition, signed by CCNC Chairman Abdulsalam Musa Akinkunmi and General Secretary Owolabi Hassan, questioned why large scale personnel shifts are occurring in Osun while similar measures were absent in states with earlier election dates, such as Ekiti and Anambra. This perceived inconsistency has led the groups to claim that Osun State is being unfairly targeted for political manipulation. The groups argued that these selective administrative actions directly undermine the commission’s constitutional mandate to remain a neutral and impartial umpire in the democratic process.
Concerns Over Unauthorized Voter Transfers
Beyond personnel concerns, the civil society groups highlighted a potential breach of electoral laws involving the movement of registered voters. The groups alleged that numerous citizens have had their registration data transferred to unfamiliar or strategically significant areas without their explicit authorization. They described these illegal transfers as a deliberate attempt to distort the election’s outcome, warning that vigilant citizens are prepared to resist any efforts to subvert the sanctity of the ballot.
