Bridging the Skills Gap in the Hydrogen Economy

In a significant move toward preparing South Africa’s workforce for a low-carbon future, the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) and JSE-listed energy giant Sasol have officially launched a green hydrogen fuel cell training programme. Located at Sasol’s operations in Sasolburg, Free State, the initiative focuses on providing practical, applied education in one of the most critical sectors of the global energy transition. CHIETA CEO Yershen Pillay emphasized the necessity of the project, stating that a successful transition is impossible without a dedicated focus on skills development.

Practical Training via Advanced Technology

The centerpiece of the new facility is a 50 W hydrogen fuel cell system. This working model allows learners to engage directly with the hardware, conducting experiments to understand system functions in a controlled, industrial environment. By working with actual fuel cell components, students can translate abstract scientific principles into functional competencies required for real-world maintenance and operation.

A Comprehensive Renewable Energy Curriculum

To ensure a holistic understanding of the sector, the programme integrates fuel cell technology with other critical renewable energy fundamentals.
