Fatal Intervention at Hubbard Inn

The River North nightlife district became the scene of a death investigation this week following a violent encounter at the Hubbard Inn located at 110 W. Hubbard St. Early Monday morning, Bryan Christopher Watson was performing his duties as a security guard when he attempted to de-escalate a physical dispute. During the struggle, Watson was allegedly pushed down a set of stairs. While he was initially able to stand after the fall, witnesses reported that he later clutched his chest and collapsed in another room.

Medical Determination of Traumatic Arrest

Emergency responders spent approximately 40 minutes treating Watson at the scene before he was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Medical personnel indicated that the cause of death was traumatic arrest, a condition where the heart stops due to blunt force trauma. While the initial police reports cite this finding, the Cook County medical examiner’s office is still working to finalize the official cause and manner of death.

Legal Status and Suspect Release

A man was taken into custody shortly after the incident, but he has since been released. The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Cook County state’s attorney’s office declined to bring charges at this time. Such decisions often occur when there is a need for more definitive medical evidence to prove a direct causal link between a physical shove and a subsequent cardiac event. Detectives from Area Three are continuing to review surveillance footage from the nightclub to determine if the case will be re-presented for prosecution.
