Fatal Collision on East 83rd Street
Chicago police have launched a search for a motorist involved in a deadly hit-and-run that occurred late Tuesday night. Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian lying in the street around 10 p.m. in the 2100 block of East 83rd Street. Upon arrival, emergency responders found a 32 year old woman suffering from severe trauma. She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Into the Fleeing Vehicle
The vehicle responsible for the strike did not remain at the scene, and no description of the car or the driver has been released to the public as of Wednesday afternoon. Major Accident detectives have taken over the investigation, canvassing the area for potential surveillance footage or witnesses who may have seen the vehicle traveling through the South Chicago neighborhood at the time of the crash. The identity of the victim has not yet been formally released pending notification of her family.
Rising Concerns Over Pedestrian Safety and Transit Security
The incident adds to a series of violent and accidental events impacting the city's transit corridors. As police investigate this hit-and-run, the CTA is simultaneously rolling out a new security plan that includes the deployment of sheriff's deputies on trains and the installation of high barrier gates. These measures are part of a broader push to address safety concerns for both pedestrians and commuters navigating the city's streets and transit lines.
