Transforming Organizational Skills into Sustainable Livelihoods

The Vending for Independence Programme was born from a father’s observation of his son’s natural aptitude for orderly arrangement. After failing to secure a supermarket role for his 21-year-old son, Cairn, who has moderate autism, William Tan purchased a vending machine to serve as a specialized side hustle. This model proved ideal for the young man, a graduate of APSN Delta Senior School, as it leveraged his interest in restocking items while removing the high-stress requirement for direct customer interaction. Since starting in 2023, the venture has evolved from a simple activity into a professional routine that has significantly bolstered the young man’s confidence and technical capabilities.

Educational Framework for Entrepreneurial Success

To expand this opportunity to other families, Mr. Tan founded Caresons, a non-profit entity that offers a comprehensive curriculum for neurodivergent individuals and their caregivers. Participants pay a $3,900 fee, which covers structured training sessions, professional consultations, and a six-month lease for a vending machine. At the conclusion of this period, families have the option to purchase the equipment for $1,000. The curriculum extends beyond mechanical operation, teaching foundational business skills such as cost management, inventory planning, and the use of digital tools like Excel for financial tracking.

Strategic Community Partnerships and Institutional Support

The programme’s growth is anchored by significant institutional backing and local political advocacy. The Enabling Lives Initiative Grant, funded by the Tote Board and managed by SG Enable, provides the necessary financial support for this disability innovation. Furthermore, Bukit Panjang MP Liang Eng Hwa played a critical role by securing a placement for a machine at the Bukit Panjang Community Club at a non-commercial rate. This intervention was vital after a previous operation at a condominium faced closure due to management changes, demonstrating the importance of community mediators in sustaining small scale inclusive enterprises.
