A New Chapter in Energy Governance

In a decisive move to modernize the leadership of Ukraine’s largest state-owned energy company, the Supervisory Board of Naftogaz Ukrainy has elected Duncan Nightingale as its new Chairman. Nightingale’s appointment follows a rigorous international selection process initiated in late 2025, aimed at installing independent experts with deep sector-specific knowledge. With more than 30 years of experience in the global oil and gas industry, the Canadian executive is expected to provide the strategic oversight necessary to navigate the complex geopolitical and logistical challenges currently facing the Ukrainian energy sector.

Strengthening State and Independent Collaboration

The board’s first meeting in its renewed composition also saw the election of Kostiantyn Marievych, the State Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers, as Deputy Chairman. This pairing of a seasoned international industry professional with a high-ranking state representative is intended to ensure a balance between independent strategic direction and national security priorities. Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretsky emphasized that the formation of a professional board, adhering to the "best global standards," is an essential milestone for the company’s long-term institutional development and its ability to attract foreign investment.

Establishing Specialized Oversight Committees

To streamline its operations for the 2026 fiscal year, the Supervisory Board established three critical committees focused on specific areas of corporate health. The Committee on Appointments, Remuneration, and Evaluation will be led by Robert Sleszynski, while the Audit and Finance Committee will be chaired by Eric Rasmussen. Additionally, a Strategy and Sustainable Development Committee was formed under the leadership of Tor Martin Anfinnsen. These bodies are tasked with ensuring transparency in financial reporting and the responsible execution of Naftogaz’s transition toward more sustainable energy practices.
