Judicial Conclusion for Bakersfield Involuntary Manslaughter Case
A Kern County judge finalized the criminal proceedings against Maya Hernandez on March 5, delivering a 15 year prison sentence. The sentencing follows a February plea agreement in which Hernandez pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter regarding the death of her son, Amillio Gutierrez. The plea deal effectively resulted in the dismissal of a first degree murder charge that had been originally filed after the toddler was found unresponsive in the summer of 100 degree heat.
The Fatal Timeline of the Bakersfield Spa Visit
The tragedy unfolded on June 29, 2025, when Hernandez arrived at a Bakersfield medical spa for lip filler injections. Court records indicate that Hernandez left her two young sons, ages one and two, strapped into their car seats for approximately two hours. While the specific cosmetic procedure reportedly lasted less than 20 minutes, the defendant remained away from the vehicle for a significantly longer duration, leaving the children vulnerable to rising temperatures.
Technology Failure and the Rising Interior Heat
According to investigators, Hernandez claimed she left the air conditioning running in her 2022 Toyota Corolla hybrid, set to 60 degrees. However, the vehicle was equipped with an automatic shut off feature designed to deactivate the engine after one hour of idling. Because the engine cut out while Hernandez was still inside the spa, the air conditioning failed, causing the interior temperature to skyrocket. Medical reports later confirmed that Amillio reached a fatal body temperature of 107 degrees before being discovered.
