A Public Invitation for Institutional Scrutiny
Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football, has officially expressed his support for an external investigation into corruption within the continent's governing body. Speaking at a news conference in Dakar, the South African billionaire emphasized his willingness to cooperate with any government or authority seeking to examine the organization's internal processes. This declaration follows a formal demand from the Senegalese government for increased transparency after a series of controversial administrative decisions shook the foundations of African football.
The Fallout of the Rabat Final Dispute
The current crisis stems from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final held on 18 January, where Senegal originally secured a 1-0 victory over Morocco. However, a CAF appeals board later ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match because several players temporarily walked off the pitch to protest a late penalty awarded to the host nation. Despite returning to complete the match and winning after extra time, the trophy was officially awarded to Morocco on 17 March, a move that prompted Senegal to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Leadership Departures and Moral Obligations
The administrative chaos surrounding the Afcon results has already led to significant shifts within the organization’s executive branch. Veron Mosengo-Omba, the general secretary of CAF, stepped down from his position on 29 March as the body faced a widening crisis of confidence. Motsepe has sought to distance his current administration from the historical problems associated with the confederation, describing corruption as a plague worse than a pandemic and asserting that his leadership maintains a zero tolerance policy for financial or ethical misconduct.
