Terrorism Charges Authorized Following Dual Attacks

Legal proceedings have commenced against Essa Suleiman, who faces multiple counts of attempted murder following a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into a series of stabbings on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The 45-year-old suspect, a resident of Camberwell, was charged after authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with a high-profile attack in Golders Green and an earlier incident in Great Dover Street. Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, with specialist officers providing support to the victims. The formalization of these charges marks a significant escalation in the state's response to what has been officially designated a terrorist act.

The Violent Confrontation In Highfield Avenue

The primary incident unfolded at 11:16 hrs on Wednesday when local and armed units were dispatched to Highfield Avenue in Golders Green following reports of a stabbing in progress. Upon arrival, officers confronted the suspect, who was successfully subdued with a Taser before being taken into custody. Two victims, aged 76 and 34, were discovered with stab wounds and received immediate emergency care from the London Ambulance Service and local Hatzola responders. While the 34-year-old victim has since been discharged from medical care, the 76-year-old remains hospitalized in a stable condition. The severity of the broad-daylight attack prompted an immediate lockdown of the surrounding residential area as investigators established a secure perimeter.

Connection To Earlier South East London Incident

Detectives have linked the Golders Green suspect to a separate violent altercation that occurred just hours earlier in South East London. At approximately 08:50 hrs on the same day, police were called to an address in Great Dover Street, SE1, where an occupant reported being attacked by a man armed with a knife. Although the victim in that incident sustained only minor injuries, the suspect fled the scene before police arrived. Despite a rapid six-minute response time and subsequent searches of addresses linked to the suspect, he was not located until the second attack occurred in Barnet. Consequently, Suleiman faces a third count of attempted murder specifically related to this earlier confrontation.
