Counter-terrorism operations in London

London’s Metropolitan Police conducted a series of high-stakes raids in the early hours of Friday, resulting in the arrest of four men suspected of assisting a foreign intelligence service. The suspects, consisting of one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian citizens, are accused of conducting surveillance on individuals and locations linked to the Jewish community. During the operation in Harrow, six additional men were detained on suspicion of assisting an offender. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, characterized the arrests as part of a long-running investigation into malign activities on British soil, urging the public to remain vigilant as the regional conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate.

Charitable sectors under political scrutiny

A group of Labour Members of Parliament has formally petitioned the government to implement a crackdown on domestic charities believed to be operating as part of an Iranian influence network. The MPs warned that several organizations appear to be actively promoting the ideology and interests of the Iranian state under the guise of charitable work. This political focus intensifies as concerns grow regarding the spread of Tehran’s soft power across Western institutions. Lawmakers have expressed alarm that these entities may be used to sow discord and advance the strategic objectives of the Iranian leadership during the current state of war.

Investigations into the Islamic Centre of England

The Islamic Centre of England, located in Maida Vale, remains a primary focus of these allegations. The charity has been under a statutory inquiry by the Charity Commission since 2022 and was recently contacted by the regulator regarding the sale of merchandise depicting proscribed terrorist leaders at a community event. During the ongoing inquiry, the commission removed a requirement from the charity’s governing documents that a trustee must be the official religious representative of Iran's Supreme Leader. Despite these governance reforms, critics continue to label the center an "outpost" of the Iranian government, highlighting its historical links to the clerical establishment in Tehran.
