The Screen Actors Guild Conflict
Green explained to hosts Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, and Will Friedle that the change was triggered by a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) policy designed to prevent identity confusion. Upon attempting to join the union as a young actor, Green was informed that another "Brian Green" was already a registered member. To ensure that residuals and checks were correctly distributed to the right individual, the union required him to adopt a middle name or a distinct stage name to differentiate himself.
Choosing "Austin" from a Map
The selection of "Austin" was far from a sentimental process. Green noted that finding a middle name that flowed well with "Brian Green" proved difficult for his family. Ultimately, they turned to a map for inspiration, settling on the name after realizing it provided the best phonetic balance. The actor joked that the decision was a quick fix to a bureaucratic problem, though it eventually became a permanent fixture of his public identity.
A Legacy of Name Changes in Hollywood
Green's story places him among a long list of A-listers who have navigated similar union constraints. Recent years have seen several stars address their "real" identities:
