A Story of Exile, Resistance, and Jazz
Set against the backdrop of the anti-Apartheid movement, The Road Home follows trumpeter Hugh Masekela (played by Thabo Rametsi) and vocalist Miriam Makeba (Cynthia Erivo) as they navigate the complexities of political exile. The narrative centers on the friction caused by Paul Simon’s Graceland album, which Masekela’s mentor, Archbishop Trevor Huddleston (Guy Pearce), initially boycotted for violating UN cultural sanctions. The film portrays how these iconic artists eventually collaborated to create a "supergroup" designed to amplify the South African struggle to a global audience through the universal language of jazz and township music.
Directorial Vision and Authentic Scripting
Director Bill Condon, renowned for musical successes like Dreamgirls and Gods and Monsters, describes the film as an exploration of how art intersects with activism—a theme he believes has only grown more relevant over time. The original script was penned by Michael Bronner (The Mauritanian) in collaboration with renowned South African writer Zakes Mda. To ensure historical accuracy, Bronner conducted extensive research with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation and direct interviews with Paul Simon, while Mda contributed insights from his personal discussions with Masekela.
Musical Production and Rights
A central component of the film will be its soundtrack, managed by veteran music producer Hilton Rosenthal. Rosenthal, who was instrumental during the original Graceland sessions, has secured the rights to the catalogues of Simon, Masekela, and Makeba. The production will feature new recordings of iconic songs, with Cynthia Erivo expected to deliver powerhouse vocal performances as Miriam Makeba. This musical authenticity is designed to serve as the "weapon" Masekela famously believed music to be in the fight for liberation.
