Technical Scope: National LEO vs. The European Union Bloc
Germany’s vision involves deploying 100 low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites exclusively for military use. This architecture is reportedly inspired by the Starshield platform developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has proven critical for tactical battlefield communications.
German System: 100 LEO satellites; strictly sovereign military communication.
EU IRIS² System: 290 satellites planned by 2029; a multi-orbit system designed for both government/military and commercial internet traffic.
While Berlin maintains that its initiative will "complement" IRIS², critics within the European Parliament warn that building parallel infrastructures risks creating "duplicate structures" and "fragmented standards" at a higher cost to taxpayers.
