Military Interdiction and Boarding Operations

Belgian defense forces executed a high stakes maritime operation codenamed Blue Intruder to intercept the tanker Ethera as it traveled from Morocco toward Russia. The mission involved ninety three Belgian soldiers supported by two French helicopters, leading to the vessel being diverted to the port of Zeebrugge. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken stated that the government is taking firm action against shadow fleet vessels to enforce European Union sanctions and curb the financing of military activities in Ukraine.

Technical Violations and Regulatory Failures

A comprehensive inspection of the vessel following its detention on February 28 uncovered forty five distinct violations of international maritime standards. Authorities reported numerous technical defects and confirmed that the ship was sailing under a false flag, claiming registration in Guyana without valid documentation. The results of the inspection, which were made public during a news conference on March 3, form the basis for the ten million euro fine leveled against the ship owners.

Ownership and International Sanctions History

The vessel, which was built in 2007, was acquired in 2024 by the son of a high ranking adviser to the late Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The United States previously imposed sanctions on the tanker in July 2025 due to its direct links to Iran and allegations that it served as a transport vehicle for Russian oil in circumvention of global price caps. The European Union has also placed the ship under its own sanctions regime as part of a broader crackdown on clandestine shipping networks.
