Bridging Classical Music and Rural Appalachia
In Partita, Kingsolver tells the story of a married woman and former pianist haunted by a lifelong passion for classical music that she never fully pursued. The novel is set in a small Kentucky town, a setting familiar to Kingsolver’s readers, but it introduces a unique thematic layer by asking why "small-town fiddlers and country music fans don't feel welcome in a symphony hall." The book is described as a "masterful" exploration of how personal ambitions and artistic identity intersect with the rigid social expectations of rural life.
Personal History Meets Socially Conscious Fiction
The subject matter of Partita is deeply personal for the 70-year-old author. Kingsolver was once a music scholarship student at DePauw University before switching her major to biology—a decision driven by the belief that she had little chance of a professional career in classical piano. This new work finally "entwines" her love for language and music, themes she had previously kept separate in her public-facing literary career. Despite the musical focus, the novel remains grounded in the socially conscious themes of class and community that have defined her previous bestsellers like The Poisonwood Bible.
Following the Phenomenon of Demon Copperhead The release of Partita follows what critics have called a "new stratosphere" of success for Kingsolver. Her 2022 novel Demon Copperhead, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield set in the opioid-ravaged Appalachia, was an international juggernaut. It was the first novel in the history of the Pulitzer Prizes to share the Fiction award (with Hernan Diaz’s Trust) and made Kingsolver the only woman to win the Women’s Prize for Fiction twice. The immense success of Demon Copperhead has set a high bar for Partita, placing it among the most anticipated literary releases of the late 2026 season.
