Baku Unveils Ambitious Green Energy Corridor to European Markets

Azerbaijan is positioning itself as a pivotal renewable energy hub for the European Union, with President Ilham Aliyev announcing a target to develop six to eight gigawatts of green energy capacity for export within the next five to six years. During a press conference in Baku alongside European Council President Antonio Costa, Aliyev detailed a comprehensive strategy involving massive investments in wind, solar, and hydropower. This initiative builds upon a 2022 memorandum of understanding and aims to diversify Europe's energy sources as it moves away from Russian hydrocarbons. Crucial to this plan is the development of subsea cables and advanced transmission infrastructure, which Aliyev confirmed is currently being negotiated with European technical partners.

Strategic Connectivity and Regional Peace Initiatives

The visit from President Antonio Costa also served to emphasize the "Middle Corridor," a vital transport link connecting Europe and Asia via the Caucasus. Costa highlighted that completing the Baku-Nakhchivan rail link is essential for regional economic growth and job creation. This push for connectivity comes during a period of unprecedented stability in the region; Aliyev noted that the initialing of a peace agreement with Armenia has resulted in seven months of uninterrupted peace—the longest such period since 1991. The EU has expressed its full support for this peace process, viewing Azerbaijan not just as an energy partner, but as a stabilizing force on the Union's eastern periphery.

Bahrain Detains Citizens Over "Iranian Aggression" Documentation

While the Caucasus moves toward integration, the Persian Gulf remains a theater of intense kinetic and information warfare. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry confirmed Wednesday that six individuals were arrested for circulating videos depicting the aftermath of Iranian missile and drone strikes on the kingdom. These strikes are part of Tehran’s broader retaliatory campaign following the U.S.-Israeli offensive that began on February 28. Authorities in Manama, which hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, warned that sharing unverified visual content could compromise national security and assist in "Iranian aggression" by providing battle damage assessments to the enemy.
