Opposition to Electoral Zoning Agreements

Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has entered the intensifying debate over the proposed electoral cooperation between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Addressing the press in Kakamega Town on Thursday, Savula criticized ODM leaders who are demanding a zoning arrangement as part of a 2027 pre election deal. He argued that such a strategy is undemocratic and warned that it could have far reaching negative effects on President William Ruto’s bid for a second term by limiting the ruling party's reach.

Democratic Participation and Voter Turnout

Savula expressed concern that zoning, particularly in traditional opposition strongholds, would serve to reduce the total number of votes President Ruto receives in 2027. He advocated for a completely open democratic landscape where every political party is permitted to field candidates in every elective position across the country. According to Savula, politicians pushing for regional exclusivity lack genuine democratic values and are instead focused on advancing narrow tribal or regional agendas rather than a national mandate.

UDA Candidates from Ward to Presidency

Despite the ongoing negotiations between the two major political entities, Savula affirmed that UDA will not be intimidated into conceding territory. He maintained that the ruling party is prepared to field candidates for every position, from Member of County Assembly (MCA) to the presidency, in every part of Kenya. This stance highlights a growing rift within the pro government alliance, as local leaders within the UDA, many of whom recently defected from the opposition, resist efforts to cede their competitive platforms to ODM rivals.
