Judicial Ruling at the Old Bailey
Justin Clarke-Samuel, the 41-year-old award-winning artist known as Ghetts, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Tuesday at London’s Old Bailey. The sentencing follows a fatal incident in north London last year where Clarke-Samuel struck a Nepali student while driving a BMW M5 dangerously. The court heard that the rapper was driving nearly 70 miles per hour, well above the local limits, and had been consuming alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The victim, 20-year-old student Yubin Tamang, sustained catastrophic injuries when he was hit by Clarke-Samuel’s vehicle. Prosecutors presented evidence including CCTV footage from the Metropolitan Police showing the BMW being driven along the center of the road and narrowly avoiding other collisions before hitting the student. Despite causing severe damage to his own windscreen during the impact, Clarke-Samuel did not stop to render aid and instead drove eight miles to his home.
Impact on the Victim's Family
During the emotional proceedings, the victim's mother, Sharmila Tamang, provided a tearful statement to the court through a translator. She described how her son had traveled to the United Kingdom specifically to pursue his studies, only to have his life cut short due to the defendant's negligence. The prosecution emphasized that Clarke-Samuel’s driving leading up to the crash included running red lights and traveling on the wrong side of the road, displaying a total disregard for public safety.
