The Incidents and Legal Response
The community’s alarm was triggered by two identical messages of racial incitement found last Saturday. On Thursday, police arrested a 61-year-old Papatoetoe man in connection with the graffiti near the school. He appeared in the Manukau District Court facing:
Two charges of intentional damage to a footpath (maximum penalty of three months in prison or a $2,000 fine per charge).
One charge of offensive behavior in a public place (maximum $1,000 fine).
The accused has been released on bail, a move that has contributed to the unease of local residents as children prepare to return to school on Monday.
