Early Morning Confrontation on Chiltern Crescent
The burglary occurred at approximately 4:30 am on Friday, April 17, 2026, at a property located on Chiltern Crescent. The occupants of the home were awoken by the presence of an unknown male standing inside the residence. Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Kirk of the Auckland City Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) stated that the darkness initially made it difficult for the residents to identify the individual, but it quickly became clear that the intruder was a stranger.
The situation escalated when one of the occupants screamed, which startled the intruder and caused him to flee the premises. The suspect was last seen running on foot toward Leaside Lane. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the call was placed, but the man remains at large. Investigators are currently canvassing the area for CCTV footage and potential witnesses who may have seen the man’s distinctive attire during his escape.
Distinctive Physical Markers and Unique Dress
Authorities have released a detailed description of the suspect, emphasizing several unique physical characteristics. The man is described as being of Pacific Island descent, standing approximately 172 centimeters tall. He features a notable "horse-tail" hairstyle and a prominent neck tattoo, which witnesses described as a gothic or Irish-style clover.
Perhaps most distinctive was the suspect’s clothing at the time of the break-in. He was reportedly barefoot and wearing red and white striped "candy cane" boxer shorts. Detective Senior Sergeant Kirk noted that given the specific and unusual nature of his dress, it is highly likely the individual is a local resident of the Glen Innes or surrounding Auckland community. The detail of the neck tattoo and the holiday-themed boxers are expected to be key identifiers for the public.
