A Mandate for Immediate Legislative Results
The Israeli government is facing a legal ultimatum as the Attorney General’s office insists on the immediate adoption of concrete enforcement measures during today's cabinet meeting. In a formal communication sent to Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs, Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon emphasized that the discussion must conclude with clear, actionable instructions for government ministries. The objective is to move beyond theoretical debate and initiate the practical implementation of mandatory IDF service for ultra-Orthodox men who have already received enlistment notices.
The Failure to Meet Judicial Deadlines
This urgent push for executive action stems from a High Court of Justice ruling issued in November 2025. At that time, the court mandated the government to formulate a comprehensive enforcement policy, including a suite of social and economic sanctions, within a 45-day window. According to the Attorney General’s office, the administration has failed to produce these policies, leaving a significant legal void that has drawn sharp criticism from the judiciary during recent hearings.
Judicial Frustration and the Lack of Preparation
The High Court justices recently rebuked government representatives for their ongoing failure to enforce conscription for the thousands of ultra-Orthodox men currently defying military orders. Despite this judicial pressure, Limon noted with concern that cabinet ministers have not been provided with any proposed enforcement measures or draft policies ahead of this evening's critical assembly. This lack of preparation suggests a continued internal resistance within the coalition to addressing the politically sensitive issue of Haredi enlistment.
