Top Seeds Alcaraz and Sinner Positioned for Gains
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 2 Jannik Sinner enter the Miami Open with minimal points to defend, offering both players a major opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the game. Alcaraz is defending only 10 points following a surprise second round exit twelve months ago, while Sinner is in the unique position of defending zero points due to his suspension during the 2025 event. With the top 32 seeds receiving first round byes, both are guaranteed to earn at least 10 points simply by appearing. A title run for Alcaraz would see him reach 14,550 points, while a Sinner victory would push him to 12,400.
Djokovic to Slip as Zverev Climbs
The most notable movement at the top of the rankings involves Novak Djokovic. The former world No. 1 reached the final in Miami last year, where he was defeated by Jakub Mensik. Because Djokovic is unable to compete in 2026 due to injury, he will lose all 650 points earned from that runner up finish. This mechanical drop is expected to push him down to world No. 4. Seizing this opportunity is Alexander Zverev, who only has 100 points to defend from a round of 16 exit last year. By outperforming his previous result, Zverev is positioned to overtake the Serbian legend in the official standings.
Defending Champion Mensik Faces Rankings Pressure
The biggest individual point drop belongs to Jakub Mensik. The reigning champion starts the fortnight at No. 13 in the world, but the expiration of his 1,000 points from the 2025 title win will see him provisionally fall 13 places to No. 26. While a deep run this year could mitigate some of that loss, the young star faces an uphill battle to maintain his current proximity to the top 10. Similarly, 2025 semi-finalists Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov are each dropping 400 points; Fritz is expected to dip to world No. 7, while Dimitrov faces a more severe slide in the live standings.
