A Call For Merit Over Identity Politics

At the 2026 national convention of the African Democratic Congress in Abuja, prominent political figures stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on selecting a credible and widely acceptable candidate for the 2027 elections. Former Minister Rotimi Amaechi highlighted that success in previous political coalitions was rooted in choosing viable candidates rather than succumbing to divisive considerations. He argued that the current regression into ethnic and religious discourse has weakened national cohesion and worsened the country’s many challenges.

Economic Pragmatism And The Value Of Currency

Amaechi further advocated for a shift toward economic pragmatism, noting that national prosperity is driven by the value of the currency rather than sectional identity. He pointed out that there is no religious or ethnic distinction in the marketplace, stating that the primary driver of the economy is the naira. By prioritizing shared prosperity over sectional sentiments, Amaechi suggested that Nigerians could move toward a more unified and functional society that values merit and pragmatic decision-making.

Statistical Warnings On Security And Debt

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, used the convention to present a sobering assessment of Nigeria’s current trajectory based on recent data. He noted that the country has slipped from fourth to eighth position in global terrorism rankings, a decline that necessitates immediate and collective action. Furthermore, Obi reported a massive surge in national debt, stating that figures have climbed from 87 trillion Naira to approximately 200 trillion Naira despite the removal of subsidies.
