APC Overplaying Its Hand: Arise News Editor Warns of "Narrow Escape" for Tinubu in 2027

The "Narrow Escape" Context
During a Monday broadcast of The Morning Show, Sumner Sambo provided a blunt assessment of the current political landscape in Nigeria. He reminded APC strategists that the 2023 presidential figures were remarkably close, suggesting that any assumption of an easy victory in 2027 is a "poor political calculation." Sambo noted that while Tinubu’s camp may feel secure, the data from the last general election tells a story of a deeply divided electorate where the combined strength of the opposition significantly outweighed the ruling party's margin.
The Coalition Catalyst
Sambo’s primary critique centers on the APC’s aggressive political maneuvering, which he believes has backfired. By "over-strategizing," the APC has effectively pushed rival groups—traditionally separated by regional and ideological differences—into each other's arms. He argued that a "strong political strategist" would have worked to keep the camps of Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso fragmented. Instead, the presidency's current tactics have created a "common political umbrella" that could consolidate the anti-APC vote.
A Rethink of Political Tactics
The Arise News editor suggested that President Tinubu’s skillful approach to politics might be "overstretched." By allowing a situation where all major and minor opposition leaders are considering a unified platform, the APC is facing a consolidated front that it did not have to deal with in 2023. "I’m thinking that the APC has overplayed itself," Sambo remarked, adding that the party needs to stop pushing its luck and conduct a thorough rethink of its engagement strategy with the opposition.
