Strategic Extension for Sub-National Stability
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken decisive steps to ensure administrative continuity in key Southwest states following its 8th National Convention. The party’s supreme organ approved a six-month tenure extension for Caretaker Committee Executives in Ekiti and Osun States. Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, moved the motion, explaining that the current tenures across ward, local government, and state levels were set to expire at the end of March 2026. However, due to the complexity of the current political cycle, conducting fresh congresses was deemed unviable. The extension is intended to allow for better coordination and consolidation before a permanent leadership structure is established.
Formal Dissolution of the National Working Committee
In a major procedural move, the convention witnessed the formal dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC). This action was necessary to clear the legal and administrative path for the election of a fresh slate of national officers. National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Kana moved the motion for dissolution, citing Article 13.1 of the APC Constitution. The motion, seconded by Deputy National Secretary Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana, was met with unanimous approval from the delegates, marking the official end of the previous leadership's mandate and the beginning of a new administrative era for the ruling party.
Consensus Model Adopted for National Leadership
To ensure a smooth transition and maintain party unity, the convention adopted consensus as the primary mode of election for new national officers. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, moved the motion, arguing that a defined and agreed-upon mode of election would reflect the collective will of the party and prevent internal friction. The motion received strong backing from the Governor of Kaduna State and Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Uba Sani. This move toward consensus is seen as a strategic effort to present a unified front as the party prepares for upcoming national challenges.
