A Direct Challenge To Executive Authority

Mathias Terwase Byuan, the former Executive Director of Housing Finance and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority, has formally called for the resignation of Governor Hyacinth Alia if the current administration cannot halt the persistent killings in Benue State. Byuan, who is seeking the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 elections, asserted that the primary mandate of any government is the protection of lives and property. He argued that the continued failure to prevent violent incursions into local communities represents a fundamental breach of the social contract between the state and its citizens.

Condemnation Of The Mbalom Massacre

The aspirant’s remarks were prompted by a violent Easter Sunday assault on the Mbalom community within the Gwer East local government area. Suspected armed herdsmen reportedly attacked civilians in their homes, leading to dozens of deaths in what Byuan described as a "pogrom." Through a statement released by his media director, Akange Nyagba, Byuan lamented that these unprovoked attacks have become frequent and remain largely unchallenged by the state’s security apparatus, leaving innocent residents vulnerable to external aggression.

Resignation For Rescue Mission

Byuan revealed that his decision to resign from his high ranking position at the Federal Housing Authority was specifically motivated by the deteriorating security situation in his home state. He framed his 2027 gubernatorial bid as a rescue mission, promising that his administration would prioritize both internal and external security. Byuan stated that he intends to deal with armed herdsmen decisively, ensuring that Benue communities are no longer treated as easy targets for seasonal violence.
